<image:title>Healthy Soil For Life - The Month of March, We Have A Greater Impact Together - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Just as we have seen the change in government as we collectively stand up and use our voices, we have a greater impact when we work together!! Have you been to the grocery store recently and seen the Regenerative Certified Organic label on food items? We are accustomed to conventional farming / foods, certified organic foods and in the last few years we have Regenerative Organic Certified. A few years ago at a vegan festival where I had a table, I had a long discussion with a gentlemen about organic vs regenerative organic certified. He felt that organic was the best and I explained why regenerative organic certified goes a step farther and the benefits to the planet are immense! Let’s dig in to breakdown what it all means. :) Conventional farming and food labels: Uses synthetic chemicals and GMO’s likely using monoculture (1 crop) in the same fields for years. Massive tillage and soil disturbance Factory farmed meats - no pasture time or natural light Certified Organic: No synthetic pesticides, possible some organic pesticides, exclusion of most synthetic fertilizers, no antibiotics / hormones for animal feeds Tillage / soil disturbance okay Animals raised in conditions that allow for natural behaviors, grazing on pasture for 120 days per year and 100% organic feed Regenerative Organic Certified: Defined as building soil health, ensures equity for farm workers, empower farmers and improve animal welfare through a holistic farm-based system. Food produced using methods that restore and improve the health of the planet Regenerative Ag produces healthier food and can accumulate up to 35% more carbon in the soil than conventional agriculture. Using cycles of nature for less disturbance of the soil (no tilling), planned grazing of animals, and of course keeping soil covered in plants. Foods grown using regenerative organic certified have an increase in nutrients in the food that is being grown because their are less interventions. Grocery Store Purchasing Guide Dairy Labels - Regenerative Organic Certified (You will see many local Petaluma brands on this list, yes!!) Food Labels Purchasing Guide - this is a really interesting break down of a lot of the green washing buzz words and what they really mean for the food that we consume.</image:caption>

<image:title>Healthy Soil For Life - The Month of March, We Have A Greater Impact Together - What to do you in your garden this month:</image:title>
<image:caption>If you haven’t already cut back your cover crop, it should be done in the next week or so. It is finally time to cut back all the perennial flowers. Many can be cut about 6 inches off the ground. For others, you can see where new leaves are coming in and cut right above there. At the end of the month, I always spread around a good layer of compost at the base of my plants from my compost bin, you can also use bagged compost - be sure it contains a lot of animal poop. :) That is the good stuff. If you have blueberries, be sure you are feeding them monthly with a good acid food through the fall. Just a reminder, this is a great to time to add more plants to your garden to cover bare soil. Enjoy the spring blooms coming up and get ready for summer planting, it will come upon us quick!!</image:caption>

<image:title>Healthy Soil For Life - February Tips and Tricks - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Did you know that only 6.8% of the US population actually understands what regenerative agriculture is? This is up from 4% in 2023. Regenerative agriculture is farming and gardening in the cycles of nature with the focus on building ecosystems. By using less disturbance to the soil, no till methods, planned animal grazing and cover crops it is better for the planet and the animals that inhabit it. Regenerative farming methods are indigenous practices that were forced out as colonization took place. By building healthy soils and promoting biodiversity, regenerative agriculture helps land become more resilient to extreme weather events like droughts, floods, winds and heatwaves. It also contributes to carbon sequestration (pulling excess carbon from the atmosphere) to slow climate change. Keeping soil covered with plant life helps to keep soil temperatures down and retain moisture from rainfall. When soil is completely dried out, it loses its ability to hold water, which means extreme rain run off and our top soils being washed away and of course wind can blow all our top soil away like the dust bowl. As you can see the benefits are immense! Hence, we have to get the WORD OUT! I have an action for you all, please share this newsletter with 5 friends and explain why regenerative agriculture and gardening are CRITICAL to the survival of the planet. We are so much better and have a greater impact when we work together in community! We can all use regenerative farming practices in our own gardens and have a big impact!</image:caption>

<image:title>Healthy Soil For Life - February Tips and Tricks - What To Do In Your Garden This Month:</image:title>
<image:caption>February is the month where we continue to let the garden sleep and rest! Minimal disturbance of soil and plants is beneficial to all. Roses should be hard pruned and fed if you haven’t already done so. If you are not sure how to prune the roses, reach out and I can teach you! Be sure to remove all leaves on the plant and at the base of the plant, as they can harbor fungus and disease on the new growth. If you have fruit trees, blueberries or grapes now is the time to prune as well. The few warm days are tricking our fruit trees to bud out now. Wait until end of February to hard prune (cut back) all perennials. I realize the garden looks a bit sad now - and it is taking all our might to not get the clippers out, but just wait a little longer. If you have bare soil and extra leaves on a sidewalk or driveway, you can rake them up to to put on your bare soil to build healthy soil. The dry leaves decompose and add carbon back to the soil. If you planted cover crop you can cut it back mid-month. Be sure to follow on instagram @lumafrontyardfarming and facebook.com/lumafrontyardfarming to see how to cut it back!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Welcome to January 2026! I love the New Year, it is a time to review what worked and what did not. What do you want to leave in 2025? It is a fresh chapter to be written. I am setting intentions (I really can’t stand the word resolutions :) I prefer intentions. Some of my intentions for 2026 are more social outings with my loves to see friends and family! Spending more time in nature - hikes! Finding more small moments of quiet to reset. Of course spreading the word about regenerative gardening in our own spaces!! Have you set intentions for the year ahead?</image:caption>

      <image:title>Healthy Soil For Life - 2026 Intentions - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>We have quickly entered the rainy season! Isn’t it lovely?? You might be noticing pooling on your property from the excess rains. Walk around and notice where this is happening - the areas where you see puddling are the perfect places to build a rain garden. You can have excess water pooling near a downspout or a low spot in your garden. The water is telling you where you need to build a rain garden. Rain gardens are intentional space in your garden away from the home foundation to force excess pooling water down under ground to fill up the ground water stores instead of running down sidewalks and into the ocean which does nothing to help the planet and our fresh water storage. When you plant purposeful, native plants it forces water down with their extensive root system. Why are rain gardens beneficial? Reduce flooding on the property Refill groundwater stores Filtering pollutants from going into our groundwater stores Adds beauty to your garden and, of course, brings pollinators to the garden. Note: Check out these transformations photos from a rain garden I installed this year. My client was having a river come down the hill from her neighbors homes and it was rushing past her front door. I followed the path where the water wanted to go and and dug a hole in the first picture below where there was large pooling. We we used special soil and plants to build the garden that will help absorb a large flow of water quickly. Do you want to build a rain garden on your property? It is so easy to do and does has massive benefits on the planet and our community.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Healthy Soil For Life - 2026 Intentions</image:title>
<image:caption>What To Do In Your Garden This Month: January hibernation is real!! Let’s take a note from nature and our gardens. The garden wants to be left alone - leaves left at the base of trees, flowers petals and spent stems kept in place to house overwintering pollinators. Just let everything be. Just a reminder, when you rake the leaves and toss them in the green bin you are literally raking away next years pollinators. They are all tucked in cozy for winter in your leaf litter. Roses can be hard pruned and fed come mid - January. If you not sure how to prune the roses, reach out and I can teach you! Be sure to pick up any spent rose leaves at the base of the plant, as they can harbor fungus and disease on the new growth. It is a good time to mix in a good rose food at the base of the plant, I like to use the EB Stone Rose Food. Wait until end of February to hard prune all perennials. It is too early to start working the garden. We want to let all soil be. If you have bare soil and extra leaves on a sidewalk or driveway, you can rake them up to put them somewhere else in your garden to help build healthy soil. If you planted cover crop, continue watching it grow and absorb all the lovely rains we have been having. Stay tuned for February when I show you how to cut it back!</image:caption>

Common ground is about how our food system has changed to the current model of industrial farming to make food less healthy to consumers and degrades the soil! This is a must see for EVERYONE!! If you haven’t yet seen Kiss the Ground, be sure to watch that one first!! And remember the cure to our climate crisis is right under out feet! Be kind to others, kindness and thoughtfulness goes so far and honestly can change someone’s day. Do you desire to grow food, plant fruit trees or have a native garden to feed pollinators? Sharpen and oil tools and if you can’t do it yourself - Rex’s Hardware downtown Petaluma can sharpen tools. Of course fix irrigation needs for next summer. Kick your feet up and enjoy a good cup of tea! As everyone begins the holiday shopping season. Remember to support the local business in your area. The grocery stores (Pennrgove Market and Jupiter Foods) that are run by dear friends, and the Refill Mercantile who have become good friends. Of course the Sonoma Spice Queen is is my go to for all family gifts that love to cook!! We have so MANY fabulous small locally owned business in our sweet town. The holiday season is some of their biggest income days that last them through the year. Shopping at local businesses support local families, and give to local organizations that give back to the community. <image:title>Healthy Soil For Life - Mass Healthy Soil On A Large Scale… - While we had a very mild summer locally… thank goodness, overall the planet is warming. Did you know if that if we manage our soils properly we can change the trajectory for our warming planet? It won’t keep getting hotter if we manage our soils properly, the way nature intended. For example, the grass lands around Petaluma and Sonoma County in general could be regeneratively farmed if cows are using adaptive multi-paddock grazing techniques. (Note, there are some local farmers that are using these practices). This means giving cows smaller areas to graze so they can trample, pee and poop into the soil and allow the grasses to regrow before the cows come back to eat it down again. Here is how it works: Cow hooves break up the soil Cows eat grass then poop and pee in the broken up soil. Cows then stomp and walk through pee and poop causing microbes to appear and fertilize and build healthy soil. New plants grow in the healthy soil Photosynthesis happens and finally transpiration which creates moisture and rain. This creates plants that grow year round, holding water capacity and self fertilizing with poop and pee as opposed to grass that goes dead and brown in summertime. When the grass is dead and brown the soil dies and the temperature increases. Soil that is covered in plants and plant life has a fraction of the temperature that bare soil gives off. Bare soil temperature will be in the 80-90’s. Soil covered in plants will be in the 60’s. When soil is covered in plant life it brings our outside temperature down. We have a choice…continue accepting the extreme weather changes around the globe, or make changes to promote a healthy climate. I challenge you to look around your own garden or your neighbor’s garden to see where more plants can be utilized to cover bare soil. In addition, please share this newsletter with 5 people you know that would be open to learning why regenerative agriculture can change the course of climate change and put us on a path to climate rescue.</image:title>

<image:caption>Garden Tasks for November: While I usually have task to do for each month, this month it is more about what not to do in your garden. Again nature knows what to do when we step out of the way and let the magic happen. :) - Just a reminder, instead of purchasing mums for your porch for the holidays, be sure to add asters instead because they provide food for the pollinators. - Resist the urge to clean up in your garden, I know it is really tricky at first, but I challenge you to stretch just a bit this season. You will see the benefits in spring if you do. Healthier soil, more microbes, in the soil. And of course more life for you to visually see in your garden. Ladybugs, worms, birds, and decomposers. - Of course, this is the month to cover crop. I will be looking at the a good rain coming in this month and will be spreading all my seeds. <image:caption>- If you have aphids on your milkweed, don’t cut it. If you don’t have milkweed, be sure to add it to your garden in the spring because it is one of the host plants for monarch butterflies. I am getting so many clients reaching out about this, I know it is a little gross, but this is a picture from my personal garden from last week. If you leave the aphids, it provides food for the ladybugs and then the ladybugs lay their eggs in my garden. In the spring my garden will be filled with so many ladybugs. It is all a cycle and when we interrupt the cycle we inhibit nature from creating the magic.</image:caption>

<image:title>Healthy Soil For Life - Mass Healthy Soil On A Large Scale… - Ridwell! Have you heard of it? This is one of my new favorite programs. I heard about it from the Refill Mercantile. They provide you with bags for plastic recycles. One bag is for food plastic (chips, cereal, cheese etc) and the other is for general plastic (bags from delivery food bags, shipping package plastic, newspaper plastic etc). I bought a starter kit from them and I am hooked. Even though I had really tried to eliminate plastic use in our home and purchase so many of our cleaning products and soaps from the refill store… we still love chips and cheese. :) So we do have plastic waste that was stacking up. I started collecting our plastic and have our bags hanging on our washing machine in the garage. Our garbage waste has been cut in half since starting using ridwell. They even just added corks and pill bottle containers to be sent in separate bags. Ridwell</image:title>

      <image:title>Healthy Soil For Life - Let’s Talk Weeds… - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Here are some tips for weed suppression in your garden: Over planting in your garden, which means planting plants close together so the roots collectively suppress weeds from growing. Be sure to cover all bare soil and under plants with a thick mulch (at least 3 inches) of decomposed trimmings. Bark is not the same as mulch. See the photos to the right for comparison. The dark brown one is filled with biodiversity, and microbes that add this to soil all while suppressing weeds and holding in moisture.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Healthy Soil For Life - Let’s Talk Weeds… - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>The light brown bark is wood chips and has nothing alive in it. Which one do you think is going to suppress weeds and hold in moisture? You can also use leaves as mulch if you have access to them. You can use them as a barrier to hold in moisture and add carbon back to your soil.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Healthy Soil For Life - Let’s Talk Weeds…</image:title>
<image:caption>In addition to over planting in your garden, you may also want to plant a winter vegetable garden. I love to plant a few winter veggies and cover crop the rest of the planting areas. If you are not familiar with cover crop, it is planting for the purpose of covering and feeding bare soil rather than harvesting. Cover crops manage soil erosion, soil fertility, water absorption, keep weeds down, and most importantly bring bio-diversity and organisms into the soil. In northern California, I suggest planting cover crop in early November right before you see a good rain in the forecast. I buy seeds in bulk and I mix them in a big bucket then heavily distribute them into planting areas, just barely mixing them into the soil. Over winter the plants will grow about 2-3 feet tall. In the January newsletter I will explain how to cut back your cover crop in early February and capitalize on the amazing healthy soil filled with biodiversity! Stay tuned…</image:caption>

      <image:title>Healthy Soil For Life - Watering?!</image:title>
<image:caption>“How much do I water?” This is the everlasting question from all my clients. Let’s dig into it. :) It all depends on how healthy your soil is. Did you know healthy soil needs much less water? Healthy soil is dark in color, clumps, has worms, organic matter (leaves and sticks) and feels moist to the touch. This type of soil needs less water because when it gets watered it quickly absorbs into the soil and holds onto moisture overtime. Now think about unhealthy soil, typically looks light in color, it could be rock hard clumps that are light brown and grey or it could be more sandy in nature. If you pick up a pile of this dirt it will likely be super dusty and sandy in your hands. What do you think happens when you water the unhealthy soil? There is nothing living in the rock soil or sandy soil so when it gets watered, it will pools off and runs away with any loose top soil. When we get a hard rain in west sonoma county in all of our farm lands you will see brown rivers pooling off that are caring our top soil away. If your soil falls into the healthy soil category you can probably water every other day or every two days. If plants are new planted they need water everyday for the first few months (in the heat of summer) to get established. If your soil is on the less healthy spectrum then you will want to water everyday because the water doesn’t absorb into the roots of the plant easily. As we head into the hottest part of the year make sure your irrigation is turned to 7:30pm to water deeply in the evening so it can absorb before the heat of the day the next day. For either type of soil above, you definitely want to have a very good absorbent mulch, not just playground bark, which does help a little, but not as much as a composted mulch. Be sure to schedule a consultation soon if your want help with your garden in the next few months because we are already booked through October.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Welcome to August! While July is usually a pretty warm month it was unseasonable mild. I didn’t mind the low temps, but the tomatoes and summer veggies were not super thrilled. Patience will be needed even more this year as some of the summer veggies will be a bit delayed because of the lack of warm weather. You might also be experiencing white powder mildew because of the foggy mornings. Be sure to take a look at the June Newsletter for issues with pests.</image:caption>

<image:title>Healthy Soil For Life - Patience Pays Off…</image:title>
<image:caption>Did you know that only 6.8% of the US population actually understands what regenerative agriculture is? This is up from 4% in 2023. Regenerative agriculture is farming, gardening in the cycles of nature with the focus on building ecosystems. By using less disturbance to the soil, no till methods, planed animal grazing and cover crops it is better for the planet and the animals that inhabit it. By building healthy soils and promoting biodiversity, regenerative agriculture helps land become more resilient to extreme weather events like droughts, floods, and heatwaves. It also contributes to carbon sequestration (pulling excess carbon from the atmosphere) to slow climate change. Keeping soil covered in plant life helps to keep soil temperatures down and retain more rainfall. When soil is completely dried out then it loses its ability to hold water, which means extreme rain run off and our top soils being washed away. As you can see the benefits are immense! Hence, we have to get the WORD OUT! I have an action for you all, please share this newsletter with 5 friends and explain why regenerative agriculture / gardening is CRITICAL to the survival of the planet. We are so much better when we work together in community and have a greater impact together! Education is one of the biggest reasons I started this business - we can all make an impact in our own gardens! If you want in depth, inspirational refresh please watch the Kiss the Ground film!! <image:caption>August is a mellow month patiently waiting for all garden gems ripening in the warmer temps. Be sure to pick summer veggies often to ensure a bountiful garden through fall and of course so animals don’t enjoy the literal fruits of your labor. :) I have had a number of clients ask if there is time to still plant some summer veggies. You have time to plant cucumbers, peppers, a few tomatoes, herbs, beans, corn and so many more. Of course you can also add new pollinator plants too! Be sure to deeply water new plantings to ensure they survive through the warmer days. All new plants and veggies need a water to have nice deep roots. I love planting another round of zinnias and cosmos to my garden to ensure many blooms in the fall. Lastly, you can also seed your fall veggies indoors now as well!</image:caption>

<image:title>Healthy Soil For Life - Pollinator Plants In Their Natural Habitat - Pollinators In Natural Habitat</image:title>
<image:caption>It was wonderful to see so many native pollinator plants in the wild, that I plant in so many of your gardens! Did you know that when we plant native California plants in our gardens, they need less water? This is because they are adapted to growing without much water during the summer in their natural habitat. Just a reminder: healthy, living soil still needs water. It's not accurate to think you should never water at all. Without water, the soil can die. Healthy soil, compost, and a good mulch (not wood chips) will benefit your garden. Planting an all-succulent garden doesn’t support soil health. Many people believe that being drought-friendly means never watering, but avoiding water entirely can actually harm the soil.</image:caption>

<image:title>Healthy Soil For Life - Pollinator Plants In Their Natural Habitat - Sweet Pea Seeds</image:title>
<image:caption>Lastly, if you have spent poppies and sweet peas from your spring blooms. Leave the dead seed pods in the garden. I know, seeing dead brown tumbleweeds is something we have to get used to, but it will be worth it and so much better for the ecosystem you are building in your garden. The plants will dry out and the pods will open up and seeds will get distributed in the garden. The birds will use the small sticks to build nests, eat the seeds and next year you will have flurry of blooms that reseed in the garden!</image:caption>

<image:title>Healthy Soil For Life - Patiently Waiting for the Summer Bounty - End of June means our apricot tree starts putting on a fantastic show of the sweetest most delicious apricots. Our beloved tree had to get a heavy pruning last fall so our crop will be smaller this year. Normally I get pounds and pounds of apricots that my family cherish and feast on right under the tree. The rest are canned or made into jam, I even freeze homemade hand pies. I can’t let one tiny gem go to waste! For fruit trees be sure to thin the fruit by picking some early.
